Local Service

Picture
It is easy to be distracted by the flashy idea of service trips and forget about helping local communities. I made it my goal after first traveling to the Dominican Republic that I would find ways to get involved with volunteer groups in Hartford and not limit myself to aiding those a plane ride away.

I live in a primarily white, middle-to-upperclass neighborhood. Many of my friends that go to public school are sheltered and uncultured, despite the vibrant city of Hartford filled with diverse food, people and music right next door. To close this gap I've volunteered at the House of Bread, a soup kitchen affiliated with my church St. Patrick St. Anthony, as well as with Journey Home, an organization that works to return the homeless to stable living spaces and help with moving.
The main thing these two groups share in common is the opportunity to meet and interact with people of different backgrounds, economic status and experience (instead of a removed, indirect donation of money). Not only do I learn the misfortunes people suffer from just down the street, but I meet passionate and driven individuals in the volunteer community and am inspired by their dedication.
